The Chesne brew house

HISTORY

Two clearly distinct brewhouses existed in Durbuy in the 14th century: the corn market brewhouse and the "Au Chesne” brewhouse. The beer (also called "cervoise") is made with ground barley residue to which spelt wheat is sometimes added. The “Hougarde” is brewed.

Hops are grown in the hopyard. In 1766, thirteen inhabitants out of 63 declared that they owned a hopyard. The castle had its own private brewhouse.
Towards 1560, Philippe Marckloff had a brewhouse at Durbuy. He built the Au Chesne house in a square overlooking the Ourthe.

MARCKLOFF <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--> installed the second distinct brewhouse in the town in his enormous house. This therefore gave him half the monopoly of making and selling beer in Durbuy and the neighbouring villages.
His two sons, Christern then Jean Marckloff and Michel Trine carried on the tradition. They created the Marckloff brand in the establishment “La Ferme au Chesne”.
